Journal Descriptions

Launched in 1974 on the initiative of Professors Jean-Baptiste Duroselle (Paris) and Jacques Freymond (Geneva), Relations internationales is one of the few French-language periodicals on the history of international relations. True to its Franco-Swiss origins, the journal is currently sponsored by the Institut d'histoire des relations internationales contemporaines (IHRIC), the Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement (IHEID) in Geneva, and the Institut Pierre Renouvin (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne)(http://ipr.univ-paris1.fr/). It is published four times a year. One is devoted to "Nouvelles recherches", a selection of varied articles, often by young authors, but without exclusivity; another is essentially a thematic dossier on a subject chosen by the editorial board; and two issues publish the contributions presented at the annual colloquium organized jointly by IHRIC and IHEID. These publications are available in both paper and electronic formats. Its editors are university historians who teach international history and head research centers in French, Swiss and foreign universities, doctoral students and senior researchers. Personalities from the international world also contribute their testimony and experience on the subject in question. It presents concrete case studies, based on the widest possible range of sources, including archives as they become available to researchers, as well as theoretical articles and reading notes on major scientific works. It follows in the footsteps of the French historical school founded by Dean Pierre Renouvin, which looks beyond the actions of "decision-makers" and states to explain international relations in terms of "deeper forces". Free of their convictions, its editors analyze the motivations behind relations between states and between multinational or transnational groups, looking for the economic, psychological, ideological, cultural, strategic and political causes.
