Journal Descriptions

Recreational Sports Journal is a well‑established academic journal dedicated to advancing scholarship on recreational sports and collegiate recreation. First appearing in 1977 as the NIRSA Journal and later adopting its current title, the RSJ continues to serve as the official scholarly publication of the NIRSA Foundation, publishing peer‑reviewed research that contributes to knowledge and practice in campus recreation and related fields. The journal is published bi‑annually and features empirical studies, theoretical discussions, and applied research that are relevant to professionals, educators, and scholars interested in the design, delivery, and impact of recreational sports programs within higher education. Its scope includes research on leadership development, student engagement, program assessment and evaluation, facility operation and design, supervision and personnel issues, marketing and sponsorship, legal and ethical considerations, and organizational strategies that foster inclusive, effective recreational environments. As part of its mission, the RSJ disseminates research that both informs practice and advances scholarly discourse in the field of recreation and sport. The journal is indexed in databases including the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of Web of Science and is published by SAGE Publications in collaboration with the NIRSA Foundation, ensuring wide academic visibility and adherence to high editorial and ethical standards.
