Recherches de Science Religieuse (RSR)
Journal Descriptions
Born in the dramatic context of the "modernist crisis", the RSR addressed, from 1910 onwards, the fundamental questions that arose in theology, due to historical research on Christian origins, on the history of the Bible and dogma and on non-Christian religions. The parent journal, Études, could no longer assume this task because of the excessively technical nature of the problems and their disturbing novelty, the idea of a specific organ that would allow greater freedom of discussion was imposed. Thus, readers were constantly informed of all major publications, on the international level, in the various fields of religious studies, history, biblical exegesis, philosophy and theology. The impressive collection of these Technical Bulletins represents one of the distinctive features of Recherches among scholarly journals. The distinction between "religious science" and "theology" is in fact an indication of an intellectual and institutional tension, inherent in all critical research worthy of the name, which, in the current changes, retains its entire relevance: "religious" matters obviously fall within the scope of scientific investigation, but it would be illusory to believe that they could be removed from the beliefs that guide the life of the researcher and the social formations to which he belongs. As for the Christian tradition, it has attempted to expose the heart of its mystery to the developments of human intelligence in a sometimes difficult process of learning, the Church that carries it out needing only the truth to survive in history.
