Queue (Queue)
Journal Descriptions
ACM Queue is a bimonthly magazine published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) since 2003. It is aimed at software engineers, architects, and computing professionals who need deep technical and strategic insight into contemporary challenges in software and systems development. Rather than focusing on superficial industry news, Queue presents thoughtful articles, columns, and interviews that grapple with complex issues such as large-scale system design, emerging architectures, reliability engineering, cloud and distributed computing, and software craft. Its content is created “by engineers for engineers” — meaning that authors are typically seasoned practitioners or recognized experts invited to share their experiences and perspectives. The magazine also includes discussions of long-term trends, such as evolution of programming paradigms or the implications of new language features, often with forward-looking analysis useful for planning and decision-making in practice. Because of its emphasis on practice over pure research, Queue is not classified as a peer-reviewed academic journal by ACM, but it is distributed as part of ACM Professional Member benefits and by subscription, and its articles often appear in ACM’s broader digital ecosystem. Over two decades of publication have made it a respected resource for bridging the gap between computer science research and industrial engineering practice.
