Qualitative Inquiry (QI)
Journal Descriptions
Qualitative Inquiry is a leading international journal dedicated to advancing qualitative research methodology in the humanities and social sciences. Since its inception in 1995, the journal has served as a critical platform for scholars who explore, challenge, and innovate qualitative methods. Unlike journals that focus narrowly on empirical results, Qualitative Inquiry foregrounds the theoretical, philosophical, and methodological dimensions of qualitative inquiry, making it a central venue for discussions that shape the epistemological foundations of qualitative research. The journal welcomes work across diverse qualitative traditions — including ethnography, autoethnography, narrative inquiry, visual methods, participatory research, and post-structural perspectives — and encourages contributions that critically engage with norms and assumptions in qualitative scholarship. It is interdisciplinary in scope, attracting authors and readers from sociology, anthropology, education, cultural studies, health research, communication, and other fields where qualitative methods are foundational. Both established and emerging approaches to qualitative work are featured, with an emphasis on thoughtful, reflective, and innovative methodological advances. The journal’s commitment to methodological rigor and critical scholarship continues to influence debates about how qualitative research is conceptualized, taught, and practiced globally.
