Journal Descriptions

Public Understanding of Science is a bimonthly international peer-reviewed journal established in 1992 and published by SAGE Publications. Since its inception, the journal has played a leading role in advancing scholarship on how science and scientific expertise are perceived, discussed, and enacted in society. It explores questions central to science communication and public engagement, such as how scientific knowledge is communicated through media and education, the public’s attitudes and trust toward scientific institutions, controversies over emerging technologies, and how science intersects with politics, culture, and everyday life. Combining theoretical insight with empirical rigor, the journal publishes a wide array of article types, including original research articles, review essays, commentaries, and methodological contributions. Its interdisciplinary orientation makes it valuable to scholars in communication and media studies, sociology of science, psychology, philosophy and history of science, and public policy, as well as to practitioners involved in science outreach, museum education, and public engagement. Indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, the journal contributes to shaping research agendas in science communication and public understanding of science worldwide by promoting work that critically examines the dynamics of science–society relations across diverse sociocultural contexts.
