Journal Descriptions

Psychonomic Science was a peer-reviewed scientific journal in experimental and cognitive psychology that played an important historical role in the development of modern cognitive science. It was established in 1966 by psychologist Clifford T. Morgan and later became part of the publishing program of the Psychonomic Society. The journal focused on rapid publication of short experimental reports in areas such as perception, memory, learning, psychophysics, attention, and human cognition. Unlike long theoretical journals, Psychonomic Science emphasized brief, concise empirical findings, allowing researchers to quickly share experimental results with the scientific community. This format helped accelerate communication in psychological research during the 1960s and early 1970s, a period when cognitive psychology was rapidly expanding. The journal was eventually discontinued in 1972, after which its role was partially absorbed by other Psychonomic Society journals such as Memory & Cognition and Perception & Psychophysics. Despite its relatively short lifespan, Psychonomic Science is historically significant because it contributed to establishing the Psychonomic Society’s journal publishing program and influenced the development of experimental psychology publishing standards. Today, its archived articles remain accessible through digital repositories and continue to be cited in historical research on cognitive psychology.
