Journal Descriptions

Psychobiology was a scientific journal focused on the biological foundations of behavior and mental processes. Established in 1917, it published research exploring how brain structures, neural systems, and physiological mechanisms influence cognition, emotion, learning, perception, and behavior. The journal played an important role in the development of biological psychology during the late 20th century, when neuroscience-based approaches to psychology were rapidly expanding. The journal primarily included experimental studies in psychophysiology, behavioral neuroscience, neurobiology, and cognitive psychology. Researchers published findings on brain-behavior relationships, neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory, sensory processing, and physiological correlates of psychological functions. It served as a platform for interdisciplinary research bridging psychology, biology, and neuroscience. In 2001, Psychobiology was succeeded by Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience, reflecting a broader and more modern neuroscience focus. This transition marked a shift toward integrating cognitive science, affective neuroscience, and behavioral research under one journal. Although the original title is no longer active, Psychobiology remains significant in the history of neuroscience publishing, as it contributed to shaping modern behavioral neuroscience and supported early research linking brain function with psychological processes. Its archived articles continue to be referenced in historical and scientific studies of brain–behavior relationships.
