Probation Journal (PJ)
Journal Descriptions
robation Journal is one of the longest-running academic journals in the criminology and criminal justice field, first established in 1929. It serves as a peer-reviewed international forum for disseminating high-quality research, critical debate, and evidence-based insights on the theory and practice of probation, community supervision, and broader criminal justice issues. The journal publishes scholarly articles that explore topics such as offender rehabilitation, supervision strategies, community safety, diversion and alternatives to custody, youth justice, victim support, policy implementation, and the intersection of practice and research. Both academics and practitioners contribute to the journal, making it relevant to policymakers, probation officers, criminologists, and allied professionals. Its editorial approach balances empirical research, theoretical analysis, and practice-oriented discussion, fostering dialogue between researchers and those working in probation services worldwide. The journal also encourages submissions that assess the effectiveness of interventions, critically examine systemic challenges in criminal justice, and offer insights into emerging issues such as restorative justice, desistance theory, risk and needs assessment, and inclusive practice. Despite being published in association with a professional body (NAPO), editorial decisions remain independent, emphasizing academic integrity and broad intellectual engagement. Probation Journal is read across over 25 countries and is regarded as a significant voice in shaping both scholarship and practice in community justice and offender management.
