Physical Review Online Archive (PROLA) (PROA)
Journal Descriptions
The Physical Review Online Archive (PROLA) is a comprehensive digital archive service provided by the American Physical Society (APS) that delivers long‑term access to the historic corpus of the Physical Review journal family. Rather than functioning as a stand‑alone research journal, PROLA serves as a repository and access platform for previously published APS journal content — essentially preserving and making searchable the scientific record of physics research dating back to 1893, when the Physical Review was first established. PROLA contains the complete archival back issues of a wide range of AP S journals, including early Physical Review Series I & II, various Physical Review Sections A–E, Physical Review Letters, and Reviews of Modern Physics. The service ensures that users — typically academic researchers, librarians, and institutions — can access full‑text PDFs and metadata of historic articles for research and scholarship. Content is added annually as the current journal issues age out of the rolling access period (commonly the current and recent three years are available through regular subscription channels; older material migrates into PROLA). Unlike periodic scholarly journals, PROLA does not publish new research or have a defined issue frequency; instead, it is maintained as an archival database that enhances long‑term accessibility of APS’s scholarly journal heritage. Its searchable interface allows browsing by journal title, volume, article, and year, making it a valuable resource for exploring the evolution of physics knowledge and locating classical research contributions.
