Journal Descriptions

the Nouvelle Revue Théologique covers virtually all areas of the theological sciences: Scripture, dogmatics and patristics, ethics and pastoral care, liturgy and spirituality, philosophy and fundamental theology, ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, and Church history. In this way, the magazine is able to offer a theological perspective on current events. Each issue (176 pages) includes six to eight articles (10 to 20 pages) and reviews of around 100 French and foreign publications. A university-level publication, it is edited by a group of professors from the Theological Institute of the Jesuit Faculty of Theology in Brussels. It does not require in-depth theological training, and is aimed at any reader interested in learning more about Christian reflection. One of the most appreciated contributions of the Nouvelle Revue Théologique is its bibliography. With over 400 reviews a year, the magazine has listed more than 44,000 works over the last 90 years. In 1865, in association with the publisher Casterman, Abbé Loiseau founded the Nouvelle Revue Théologique, of which he was director until 1895. The magazine was subsequently interrupted only by the two world wars. In 1895, the magazine was entrusted to the Redemptorist Fathers, who continued to run it until 1907. Casterman then found a new owner in the person of a French Jesuit from Toulouse, Père Jules Besson, who ran NRT until 1921. It was in 1921 that the publisher asked the Belgian Jesuits to take over editorial responsibility for the magazine, first in Leuven (1921-1948), then in Eegenhoven, near Leuven (1948-1972), and finally in Namur (1972-1997). In 1997, Casterman sold the title to the Society of Jesus. The administrative headquarters were then set up in Brussels, under the responsibility of professors from the Institute of Theological Studies, Faculty of Theology of the Society of Jesus in Brussels.
