Nordic Journal of Urban Studies (NJUS)
Journal Descriptions
The need to explore questions related to cities and urbanism is becoming increasingly precarious, for several reasons. First, as a consequence of rapid centralization and the development of the knowledge society, a growing number of people are being educated, work and live in cities. Second, handling the contemporary climate crisis requires collective, new practices, as societal and economic transitions are needed to curb the emissions. Cities are considered to have a pivotal role here, as important emitters and innovative actors, and by currently taking the lead in pursuing goals of resilient, low-carbon urban development. Third, cities face challenges of segregation, livability, access to affordable housing, economic marginalization and social inequality, and are seen as key actors in contending such issues. As a response, cities and sustainable urban development have become highly discussed research themes internationally in the later decades. ‘Urban studies’ has emerged as a broad research field, embracing studies within several disciplines, perhaps most notably human geography, planning- and development studies, sociology, environmental sciences and political sciences. Research here broadly centers on exploring structures, expansion and transformation of cities, urban processes of inclusion, exclusion, marginalization and emancipation, as well as economic and political processes. The research community has largely embraced the importance of engaging in cross-disciplinary arenas for dialogue on such issues. Today, several international journals highlight the broad disciplinary perspectives dealing with cities and attempt to create arenas where scholars can meet across disciplinary fields to engage in dialogue on this topic.
