Journal Descriptions

Nigeria and the Classics: Ibadan Journal of the Classics and Multidisciplinary Studies is a long-established peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department of Classics at the University of Ibadan. Founded in 1958, the journal serves as a scholarly platform for the study of classical antiquity in relation to African cultures and broader humanistic disciplines. It is recognized for promoting interdisciplinary dialogue between Greco-Roman classical traditions and African historical, literary, and philosophical perspectives. The journal publishes original research articles, critical essays, and book reviews covering areas such as Greek and Roman history, mythology, literature, philosophy, and comparative studies involving African traditions. It also embraces multidisciplinary contributions from fields within the humanities, including history, cultural studies, linguistics, and religion. Nigeria and the Classics follows a rigorous peer-review process and accepts manuscripts in English (and sometimes French). The journal has evolved over time, including a temporary discontinuation in the 1970s and a revival in 1994, maintaining its relevance in contemporary classical and African studies. Its primary objective is to advance scholarship that bridges classical antiquity with African intellectual traditions, making it a unique publication within global classical studies.
