Near Surface Geophysics (NSG)
Journal Descriptions
Near Surface Geophysics is an international, peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated to geophysical research and applications focused on the Earth’s near surface — typically the first tens to hundreds of meters below ground or sea floor. The journal publishes original research, case studies, methodological developments, and technical advances in geophysics as applied to environmental, engineering, geological, hydrogeological, archaeological, agricultural, mining, and civil-engineering contexts. Topics span a broad spectrum of geophysical methods including seismic techniques, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and conductivity methods, electromagnetic induction, magnetic and gravity surveys, multichannel analysis of surface waves, and advanced data acquisition, processing, modelling and inversion. Research articles emphasize practical application of geophysics to solve real-world subsurface challenges such as site characterization, groundwater exploration and monitoring, contamination assessments, geotechnical investigations, and hazard identification. In addition to technical innovation, the journal encourages submissions that integrate geophysical insights with multidisciplinary approaches to better understand subsurface properties and processes that are of societal, environmental, and engineering importance. Its scope attracts researchers, practitioners, and professionals who apply quantitative geophysical techniques to both academic and applied problems, fostering knowledge exchange across disciplines where understanding the shallow subsurface is critical.
