Journal Descriptions

Nationalism & Ethnic Politics explores the varied expressions of ethnicity in politics and its intersections with nationalism, in order to enhance understandings of the sources of both contemporary and historical identity-based conflicts, and to develop more constructive inter-group relations. The journal publishes case studies as well as comparative and theoretical analyses, and we welcome articles from interdisciplinary perspectives and different approaches, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches. As Editors, we have a strong preference for articles that have a substantive theoretical background, offering innovative perspectives for empirical research and practical understanding of cases, either individually or comparatively. At the same time, we welcome articles presenting empirical research that tests, reflects, and incorporates theoretical discussions about the role of ethnic identity in peace and conflict, minority accommodation and challenges to democratic governance. We believe such contributions to be able to attract a wide audience within the field of nationalism and ethnic politics. Nationalism & Ethnic Politics examines the effects and processes of identity-based mobilization, group formation and cohesion, ethnonational conflict and accommodation in the context of political development and what is commonly referred to as nation- and state- building.
