Namn och bygd (NoB)
Journal Descriptions
Namn och bygd is a Nordic journal founded in 1913 by Professor Jöran Sahlgren. It specializes in name research, now encompassing place names, personal names and all types of so-called "other" names (e.g. names of animals, vehicles, products, etc.), both ancient and modern. The journal has been published once a year since 1913 and is still one of the most reputable journals in its field. It is well known internationally and is represented in many university libraries. Although published in Sweden, Namn och bygd has always been a Nordic journal with strong participation from the other Nordic countries, including Iceland and Finland. The unifying force has been the common Nordic linguistic heritage, which can be seen in names in both Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, but Sami and Finnish names have also been included. The journal's policy today is to support, through original articles, review articles and reviews, both the more traditional branches of onomastics – namely interpreting names and explaining their meaning, etymology, usage, linguistic development – and to capture new trends, new name material and new research questions, also from adjacent fields such as archaeology, settlement history, cultural geography, psychology, genealogy, runology, sociology, gender studies, law. Namn och bygd is a hub in Nordic onomastics and a very important forum for the development and dissemination of onomastic methods, theories, results and controversial issues.
