Museum Anthropology (MA)
Journal Descriptions
Museum Anthropology is a long-established, peer-reviewed academic journal that fosters critical, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of anthropology and museum studies. Founded in 1986, the journal has become a leading platform for scholarly engagement with the ways material objects, collections, exhibitions, and museum practices shape human understanding of culture, history, identity, and power relations. It publishes rigorous research articles, theoretical analyses, provocative commentaries, and comprehensive reviews that explore how museums and material culture operate within global and local socio-political contexts. Its scope includes critical examinations of display practices, repatriation and restitution, colonial legacies, ethics of collection and care, cultural memory, and public education. Through rich ethnographic and theoretical work, Museum Anthropology interrogates how museums function as sites of knowledge production and negotiation among diverse publics, communities, and stakeholders. The journal encourages contributions that rethink traditional museum roles, incorporate Indigenous and community perspectives, and reveal how artifacts and collections are entwined with narratives of power, identity, and heritage. As a semiannual publication produced in partnership with the American Anthropological Association and Wiley-Blackwell, Museum Anthropology serves scholars, museum professionals, and students interested in material culture, museology, anthropology, and cultural heritage studies.
