Multimodality & Society (MS)
Journal Descriptions
Multimodality & Society is a peer-reviewed international academic journal published by SAGE Publications that advances the study of multimodal communication — an area of research that goes beyond language to include a wide array of communicative resources such as gestures, gaze, sound, image, space, material artifacts, and digital media. It provides an interdisciplinary platform for scholarship that seeks to understand how these multiple semiotic modes interact to shape social life, interaction, and meaning-making across diverse social contexts and cultural settings. The journal welcomes high-quality research that deepens theoretical and methodological understandings of multimodality, as well as empirical studies that illustrate how multimodal processes operate in interactional environments such as learning, media, work, health, governance, and identity formation. It engages with contemporary debates on how digital technologies and media practices transform communicative practices and the social landscape, offering critical insights into how multimodal resources are employed in everyday and institutional discourses. Multimodality & Society addresses questions about representation, participation, social order, inequality, and cultural production with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches that bridge linguistics, communication studies, cultural studies, education, media studies, and related fields. By consolidating conceptual frameworks and empirical work, the journal contributes to advancing both foundational multimodal theory and its applications in understanding increasingly complex forms of social interaction in a mediated world.
