Les Études Sociales (ES)
Journal Descriptions
Les Études sociales publishes works on the history of the human and social sciences (SHS) in their various dimensions (actors and institutions, theories and methods, fields of intervention and social issues) in the 19th and 20th centuries. A sociohistorical journal, it is also open to research that puts contemporary SHS into historical perspective. Multidisciplinary, its editorial board includes specialists from a wide range of disciplines (legal history, social history, political philosophy, sociology, geography, architecture, urban planning, educational sciences). Published today by the Société d'économie et de science sociales, Les Études sociales was born in 1935 from the merger of La Réforme sociale (1881-1934), founded on the initiative of Frédéric Le Play, and La Science sociale (1886-1934), directed by Edmond Demolins, then by Paul de Rousiers. After suspending publication in 1940, it did not reappear until 1948, inaugurating a "new series" currently underway. Focused on contemporary social problems when it was first published, Les Études sociales has always been open to historical studies. Today, with its focus on the history of social sciences (see editorial line above), it retains from its intellectual origins a special openness to works on the social science of Le Play and his direct or indirect followers.
