Journal Descriptions

Les Études philosophiques is a journal published by Presses universitaires de France. Founded in 1926 by Gaston Berger and first published in Marseille, the journal was originally the Bulletin of a regional philosophical society. The aim was to report on local work, while at the same time communicating international research trends and results. The journal has endeavored to maintain this dual vocation, anchored in the philosophical tradition and open to the current state of philosophy in the making. It is a forum for the development and exchange of philosophical research; it provides an overview of French and international research, publishing studies on the history of philosophy as well as breakthrough articles written by young researchers or internationally renowned philosophers. Its main field of publication is the history of philosophy, which it tackles through dossiers on classical or contemporary authors (Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, John Scotus Erigena, Duns Scotus, Michel Henry, Claude Bruaire, Martin Heidegger, Carl Schmitt, Michel Foucault, etc.), texts (Heidegger's Rector's Address), issues or themes (The Pascal of Philosophers, The Phenomenological Method, The Philosophy of Mathematics, etc.). The journal publishes four issues a year; each issue comprises a dossier of 6 or 7 articles, edited by a French or foreign specialist in the field in question; foreign-language articles are always translated into French; one or two articles are generally included in the "Varia" section. The journal makes a point of including a significant number of reviews or reading notes on significant works recently published in French or abroad. An electronic version of the journal is available on Cairn (since 2011) and on Jstor (1928-2005).
