Les Champs de Mars (LCM)
Journal Descriptions
War studies is distinguished by its commitment to encompassing all the humanities and social sciences, not just those traditionally concerned with defense and security issues. While history, geography, law, and political science constitute the bulk of work on military issues, philosophy, ethics, sociology, economics, anthropology, and others contribute greatly to understanding the phenomenon of war. The study of war does not lend itself well to disciplinary divisions. A cross-disciplinary approach is better able to grasp its subjects in all their complexity and depth. Similarly, war cannot be understood without peace, and war studies cannot be conceived independently of peace studies , work on conflict resolution, and international mediation, which is particularly well developed in the Scandinavian and English-speaking worlds. While war and peace must be distinguished analytically, they cannot be thought of separately. Recognized academically in the English-speaking world for at least half a century, war studies are particularly developed in British universities. In France, the numerous attempts to create research centers or training programs in this field at universities since the early 1970s have rarely lasted and/or never reached critical mass. However, in recent years, the situation has changed for several reasons: a generational renewal, the security context (increasing number of external operations, terrorist attacks on national territory), which has highlighted the importance of these issues, a political will to promote these subjects, and financial resources made available by the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Our ambition is to place the journal in this context and to give it an identity that is both strong and open.
