Le Débat’s aim is to bring together, through discussion, the contributions of the humanities and social sciences with a thoroughgoing reflection on current affairs and cultural developments.
Le Débat was founded in May 1980 by historian Pierre Nora, who has headed Gallimard's humanities department since 1966. He is the editor of Raymond Aron, Georges Dumézil, François Jacob, Michel Foucault, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, François Furet, Jacques Le Goff... to name but a few. Not forgetting Marcel Gauchet, who became the magazine's editor-in-chief. Le Débat thus emerged as an offshoot of this intellectual milieu - an indispensable instrument for analyzing and discussing, at their best, the major issues and debates of the contemporary world.
