Journal Descriptions

Laboratory Animal Science was a peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated to the advancement of laboratory animal medicine, animal care, and biomedical research involving experimental animals. Published by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), the journal served as an important academic and professional platform for veterinarians, researchers, laboratory technicians, and biomedical scientists from 1971 to 1999. The journal published original research articles, technical reports, case studies, and reviews related to laboratory animal health, animal husbandry, experimental techniques, pathology, toxicology, and ethical care practices. It emphasized improving the quality of animal-based research while promoting humane treatment and welfare standards for laboratory animals used in scientific studies. Laboratory Animal Science also contributed significantly to the development of standards and guidelines for animal experimentation in medical and pharmaceutical research. Topics frequently addressed included disease prevention in laboratory colonies, anesthesia and surgical procedures, nutrition, genetics, and environmental management for research animals. In 2000, the journal evolved into Comparative Medicine, reflecting a broader interdisciplinary focus on translational and comparative biomedical research. Although the original title is discontinued, it remains historically important in the field of laboratory animal medicine and continues to be widely cited in veterinary and biomedical literature.
