Journal Descriptions

Linguistics is devoted to the study of everything to do with language and languages as instruments of communication and expression. It covers general linguistics, language description (phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, etc.), diachrony, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semiology, etc. Linguistics recruits its collaborators primarily from researchers who identify the structure of languages through observation of how they function, but also from those interested in epistemology and theory. This French linguistics journal was founded in 1965 by André Martinet and published by Presses Universitaires de France (PUF). It is an international journal of general linguistics, of functionalist inspiration, which concerns "everything relating to language and languages in their functioning as instruments of communication and expression, in their variations in space and time, and in their mutual interferences ... [based on] the observation of real facts within the framework of a particular language or several specific languages" (André Martinet, Foreword, La Linguistique , 1965/1). The journal is therefore part of a functional and empirical-deductive perspective; it is aimed at all linguists who share a similar conception of the functioning of languages, but it is also open to the debate of ideas and the confrontation of points of view, whether in the field of epistemology or in that of the description and explanation of linguistic facts. Linguistics is an international journal, distributed in around fifty countries. It appears twice a year (November and June). In addition to articles, it includes discussions, book reviews, information on conferences, study days, etc. The issues are alternately thematic or free.
