Journal Descriptions

The journal, published annually, aims to foster national and international research, debate, and open methodological discussion in the history of artistic literature and art criticism, from Greco-Roman antiquity to the historicized contemporary period (i.e., no later than the twentieth century). Its focus is on the medieval and modern fields, within a Eurasian and more generally Western geographical context. It stays well clear of narrow scholastic, corporate, or market perspectives (a guarantee of this is the vast, diverse, and qualified international scientific committee that supports it). It also favors a targeted multidisciplinary approach, avoiding easy and demeaning cultural trends or giving in to the opaque demands of bureaucratic research regulation. Nor does it favor cultural standardization and leveling, whether overt or covert. In this sense, it aims to sharpen critical thinking in a period of evidently induced clouding of consciousness and to further develop hermeneutic techniques for (art-historical) texts, remaining faithful to a commitment to methodological development, yet also applicable beyond the narrowly defined field of art-historical scholarship. Italian contributions are published exclusively in Italian; those of foreign colleagues are accepted in Italian, German, English, and French. The journal, published annually, intends to foster national and international research, debate and free methodological exchange on topics concerning the history of art literature and the history of art criticism. It aims to encourage the development of interpretative techniques applied to art historical texts, in a manner which will also be applicable beyond the strictly art-historical field. Italian contributions are published exclusively in Italian. Foreign contributions are accepted in Italian, German, English and French.
