The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons was established in the fall of 1993 by the Academy in response to its membership's demand for a clinical review journal. Two issues were published the first year, followed by six issues yearly from 1994 through 2004. In September 2005, JAAOS began publishing monthly issues, for a total of nine issues in 2005, followed by 12 issues per year in 2006 through 2017. In 2015, the Journal began including research studies and, in 2018, JAAOS began publishing 24 issues per year.Each issue includes richly illustrated peer-reviewed articles focused on clinical diagnosis and management and research articles chosen for quality and timeliness. Special features in select issues provide commentary on developments in pharmacotherapeutics, materials and techniques, and computer applications.The Journal's mission is the dissemination of knowledge to improve the care of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The Editorial Board selects articles that critically evaluate and synthesize current information on the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal conditions and document the current state of orthopaedic practice.
