Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Scottish Philosophy (JSP) publishes innovative scholarship on all aspects and every period of the Scottish philosophical tradition, from the late scholastics of the fifteenth century through the eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosophers to the Scottish Idealists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The journal has a special interest in supporting work on Scottish philosophy that moves beyond the traditional period and figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, in exploring the global impact of the Scottish philosophical tradition, and in recovering the resources of the tradition for engagement with present-day philosophical research. The Journal was founded in 2003, under the editorship of Gordon Graham, expanding the Aberdeen-based Reid Studies while still retaining a special interest in the writings of Thomas Reid, and in the influence and impact of Scottish philosophy on the foundations of theology and education in North America. In 2004 the Journal moved with Gordon Graham to Princeton Theological Seminary where it continued to expand in scope and influence. At Princeton, Graham hosted yearly conferences and workshops under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Scottish Philosophy (CSSP). In 2015 the Journal also expanded from two to three issues per year. Following Graham’s retirement, the journal moved to the University of Sioux Falls, with James Foster serving as editor and director of the newly renamed Institute for the Study of Scottish Philosophy. During these years the remit of the journal was intentionally enlarged to include articles on figures from the former fringes of Scottish Philosophy, such as Lady Mary Shepherd, while still publishing articles on the major figures of the eighteenth century, and also to include contemporary scholarship from regions outside North America and Europe.
