Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Multicultural Social Work was a peer-reviewed academic journal that focused on multiculturalism, diversity, and cultural competence within the field of social work. It was published from 1991 to 2000 by Haworth Press in the United States. The journal provided an important scholarly platform for research and practice related to how culture, ethnicity, race, and social identity influence social work practice and human service delivery. It published empirical studies, theoretical papers, case analyses, and policy discussions addressing issues such as cultural sensitivity in counseling, immigrant and refugee services, racial inequality in welfare systems, and cross-cultural communication in social work practice. A key emphasis was the development of culturally competent social work interventions that could effectively serve diverse populations in increasingly multicultural societies. In 2000, the journal was renamed and continued as the Journal of Ethnic & Cultural Diversity in Social Work, expanding its scope to include broader global perspectives on diversity, oppression, and social justice in human services. The journal remains significant in the history of social work scholarship because it helped establish multicultural competence as a central concept in modern social work education, research, and practice. Its legacy continues in contemporary journals that address diversity, equity, and inclusion in social welfare systems worldwide.
