Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Marriage and Family (JMF) is one of the most respected academic journals in family studies, having first appeared in 1939 and maintained continuous publication through evolving social contexts. Initially launched as Living, it was renamed Marriage and Family Living in 1941, and obtained its current name in 1964, reflecting a broadened focus on the social and relational dimensions of family life. Today JMF is published five times a year and is recognized internationally for its high-impact research on marriage, families, and related close relationships. Researchers from multiple disciplines—including sociology, psychology, human development, economics, and demography—contribute work that explores contemporary topics such as relationship quality and stability, parenting and child outcomes, family responses to economic or social upheaval, aging and intergenerational ties, and the social determinants of family well-being. The journal emphasizes methodological rigor and theoretical advancement, welcoming quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies, systematic reviews, and critical discussions. Its readership includes academics, policymakers, and practitioners interested in evidence-based insights into how families function and change across diverse contexts. JMF’s reputation as a leading family science journal is supported by its strong citation metrics and its role in advancing scholarly understanding of central questions about human relationships and family systems.
