Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Literacy Research (JLR) is a respected, peer-reviewed academic journal that has played a central role in advancing scholarship and research in the field of literacy and literacy education since its establishment in 1969. Originally published under the name Journal of Reading Behavior, JLR expanded its focus and was renamed to reflect evolving literacy research paradigms that extend beyond reading behavior to embrace broader literacy practices, theories, and social contexts. The journal appears quarterly, offering rigorous empirical studies, theoretical essays, conceptual analyses, methodological discussions, and critical reviews that explore how literacy is taught, learned, understood, and enacted across diverse populations and settings. Its scope includes innovative research on instructional design, literacy assessment, policy and ideology, literacy across the lifespan, and the cultural dimensions of literacy practices. JLR serves a global academic readership including literacy researchers, educators, policymakers, and graduate students interested in evidence-based insights that inform both theory and classroom practice. Published by SAGE Publications in partnership with the Literacy Research Association, JLR is indexed in major databases such as Scopus and the Social Sciences Citation Index, contributing to its international visibility and impact within educational research communities.
