Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Linguistic Anthropology is an influential scholarly journal that has been publishing since 1991, bringing together interdisciplinary research at the intersection of language and culture. It appears three times a year — in May, August, and December — and is produced by Wiley Periodicals in partnership with the Society for Linguistic Anthropology (SLA), a section of the American Anthropological Association. The journal’s mission is to deepen the understanding of how language shapes and is shaped by social life. Articles engage with diverse empirical contexts and methodological approaches, including ethnographic fieldwork, discourse analysis, social interaction studies, and theoretical analysis. Its scope encompasses how linguistic practices reflect cultural norms, social hierarchies, identity work, globalization processes, political discourse, and historical change. The journal plays a central role in advancing linguistic anthropology as a discipline — fostering dialogue across anthropology, linguistics, communication studies, and related fields. It supports critical inquiry into language ideologies, communicative repertoires, narrative and performance, multilingual communities, and the role of language in social transformation. Through rigorous peer review and scholarly excellence, the journal contributes to both academic theory and the broader understanding of language in human societies. Researchers, educators, and students in anthropology, linguistics, and cultural studies widely use it as a key reference for cutting-edge linguistic anthropology research.
