Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (JHCPU) is a peer-reviewed journal focusing on contemporary health and health care issues of medically underserved communities. Of the 535 journals in the online database Project Muse, JHCPU ranks 6th in number of articles downloaded (top 1.4 %). As the owner of JHCPU, Meharry Medical College underscores its central position in the field of public health with an emphasis on the underserved, the field for which JHCPU provides a platform. We publish a wide array of work on the health and health care of the underserved in North and Central America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa (the African Diaspora), as well as internally dispossessed Indigenous people worldwide. JHCPU addresses issues such as: Health care access Quality, costs Legislation Regulations Health promotion Disease prevention JHCPU is extremely competitive, publishing approximately 15% of the papers submitted, which ensures that it remains the top venue for work concerning the health and health care of the underserved. Regular features include research papers and reports, literature reviews, policy analyses and evaluations of noteworthy health care programs, as well as a regular column written by members of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. JHCPU appears quarterly, as it has for the past 34 years (since its founding by then-President Dr. David Satcher). We also produce supplemental issues (up to four in a year) and books [Natural Disasters and Public Health (2009), Free Clinics (2013), Obesity Interventions (2013)], all published by Johns Hopkins University Press. In addition to our subscription platform on Project Muse, the Journal offers all readers open access to a limited number of articles on its PrePrint. Additionally, we attend several major conferences (APHA, NMA, Academy Health, RCMI among others) each year. Please feel free to stop by our exhibit booth during these conferences to discuss our publication and your interests. You may also visit us in person on Meharry’s campus (in Hulda Margaret Lyttle Hall, 113) or reach out to us by telephone (800.669.1269) or e-mail (JournalAdministration@mmc.edu).
