Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR)
Journal Descriptions
The Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR) is a peer‑reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing family theory and facilitating scholarly integration across disciplines concerned with families and family processes. First published in 2009, the journal was founded to address the need for rigorous theoretical development and critical synthesis of existing knowledge in the social sciences that examine how families operate and evolve. It is published quarterly by Wiley‑Blackwell on behalf of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), a leading family science professional organization. JFTR focuses on theoretical innovation, offering original conceptual work that deepens understanding of family dynamics, relationships, structures, and social influences. The journal publishes integrative reviews, meta‑analytic syntheses, theory critiques, and advanced methodological discussions at the interface of theory and method — rather than empirical reports, with the exception of meta‑analyses. Its articles draw from family studies, sociology, developmental and social psychology, communication sciences, and health fields, addressing diverse family forms across cultures, ages, and social contexts. JFTR serves scholars, theorists, and advanced graduate students interested in conceptual frameworks that shape contemporary family science. With an emphasis on inclusivity and multidisciplinary dialogue, the journal supports the development of robust, culturally responsive family theories that can guide research, policy, and practice.
