The Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering - JECE provides a forum for the publication of original and innovative research on the development of advanced, safer, green and sustainable environmental technologies towards a carbon-neutral circular and self-sufficient bio-based economy, focusing on soil, water, wastewater and air decontamination; pollution monitoring, prevention and control; advanced analytics, sensors, impact and risk assessment methodologies with applications in environmental chemical engineering; endogenous resource recovery (water, nutrients, materials, energy); industrial ecology; waste streams valorization; waste management, including e-waste; climate-water-energy-food nexus; novel materials for environmental, chemical and energy applications; sustainability and environmental safety; water digitalization, water data science and machine learning; process integration & intensification; recent developments on green chemistry for synthesis, catalysis and energy; and original work on contaminants of emerging concern, persistant chemicals and priority substances including microplastics, nanoplastics, nanomaterials, micropollutants, antimicrobial resistance genes, and emerging pathogens including new and neglected pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) of environmental significance. JECE calls for full-length research papers, critical review papers, and opinion papers, that cover the following fields: Novel Materials for Environmental Applications The Novel Materials for Environmental Applications section considers papers describing the development of new materials for the detection, quantification and elimination of pollutants in soil, water, air and waste streams. Theoretical calculations can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component. Novel Materials for Energy and Chemical Applications The Novel Materials for Energy and Chemical Applications section considers papers describing the development of new materials for carbon capture and conversion, production of renewable and clean energy (CH4, NH3, H2, methanol, biofuels, solar fuels, and other synthetic fuels), and green chemicals. Theoretical calculations can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component. Environmental Chemical Engineering - Physico-Chemical-Biological Processes The Environmental Chemical Engineering - Physico-Chemical-Biological Processes section considers papers dealing with emerging topics in physico-chemical-biological processes for enviromental and chemical purposes, including Sedimentation, Filtration, Stripping, Absorption, Adsorption, Biosorption, Bioaccumulation, Ion Exchange, Coagulation-Flocculation, Precipitation, Flotation, Disinfection, Membrane Processes, Magnetic Separation, Particle Separation, Phase Separation, Multiphase Extraction, Thermal/Evaporative Processes, Electro-Dialysis, Hydrocyclones, Electrolysis, Green/Grey Biological Processes, Engineered Bioreactors, Biofiltration, Wetlands, Omics Based Approaches, Enzymatic Processes, etc. Theoretical/modelling can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component. Environmental Chemical Engineering - Redox Processes The Environmental Chemical Engineering - Redox Processes section presents papers dealing with redox processes for enviromental and chemical purposes, including Ozonation, Chlorination, Ferrate, Zerovalent Iron, Non-Photochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes in Homogeneous Phase (Ozonation in Alkaline Media, Ozonation with Other Oxidants, Fenton, Electro-Oxidation, Electro-Fenton, Microwaves, Sonolysis, Plasma Oxidation, Wet Air Oxidation, etc.), Photochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes in Homogeneous Phase (Photolysis, Photolysis of Water in Vacuum Ultraviolet-VUV, UV/H2O2, UV/Persulfate, UV/O3, UV/O3/H2O2, Photo-Fenton, Electro-Photo-Fenton, etc.), Non-Photochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes in Heterogeneous Phase (Catalytic Oxidation, Catalytic Ozonation, Catalytic Wet Oxidation, Electrocatalysis, etc.), Photochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes in Heterogeneous Phase (Photocatalytic Ozonation, Photocatalysis, Photoelectrocatalysis, etc.), and others. Theoretical/modelling can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component. Environmental Surveillance The Environmental Surveillance section presents papers focusing on the collection and analysis of samples of soil, water, wastewater, air, foodstuffs, biota, and other media with a view to assessing exposure, environmental impact and health risks. Seeing environmental surveillance in light of the integrated concept of One Health can provide valuable tool sets in combatting preventable emerging diseases, as well as minimize the risk of human and viral outbreaks, such as SARS-COV-2. Wastewater surveillance can serve as a sentinel for human infectious diseases and human consumption habits and advances in this field are important for turning wastewater to an important source of information for policy makers and relevant authorities. Theoretical/modelling can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component. Green and Sustainable Science and Engineering The Green and Sustainable Science and Engineering section presents papers focusing on innovative scientific and engineering solutions towards a carbon-neutral circular and self-suficient economy. Topics in this section include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Green processes and system integration for resources recovery (including water, nutrients, energy and materials), waste streams valorization, climate-water-energy-food nexus, and minimization of environmental pollution and hazardous materials (including environmental and economic impact assessment); 2) Green processes and system integration for renewable and clean energy production (including biogas, biofuels, solar fuels, green hydrogen, green ammonia); 3) Innovative technologies for greenhouse gas mitigation technologies including carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Theoretical/modelling can be included, but full-length research papers considered must have an experimental component.
