Journal of Eastern Christian Studies (JECS)

The Journal of Eastern Christian Studies (JECS) and its supplements book series (ECS) publish peer-reviewed essays and monographs that explore the rich and diverse world of eastern Christianity. The scope of the journal and series stretches from late antiquity to the present, encompassing all Eastern and Oriental Orthodox traditions, the Church of the East, and eastern Catholic traditions, among others. The journal and series feature historical and contextual studies, placing a particular emphasis on past and present interactions between various Christian denominations as well as their engagement with non-Christian religious traditions. This includes topics such as inter- and intra-religious dialogue and conflict, "World Orthodoxy", and Christianity within the Islamicate world. Contributions of a (religious-)historical, social-scientific, and philological nature or a combination of these and other relevant approaches are welcome. Editions of texts accompanied by translations and critical introductions also find a place in the journal. The primary languages of publication for the journal and series are English, French, and German. For over two decades, JECS and ECS have been jointly managed by the Institute for Eastern Christian Studies (IvOC) at Radboud University Nijmegen (NL) and the Louvain Center for Eastern and Oriental Christianity (LOCEOC) at KU Leuven (BE) in close coordination with an international advisory board. Brill has published the journal and series since 2022. Previously, both appeared under the aegis of Peeters, including issues up to 2001 under the journal’s former name, Het Christelijk Oosten.
