The Journal of Early Childhood Literacy (JECL) is a well-established, quarterly scholarly journal that has played a leading role in international research on early childhood literacy since its launch in 2001. Published by SAGE Publications, JECL provides a distinguished forum for researchers from education, psychology, semiotics, sociology, linguistics, and other allied disciplines to share cutting-edge research on how young children engage with literacy in multiple forms. The journal emphasizes rich, theory-informed empirical studies that explore the development, contexts, functions, uses and meanings of literacy in the early years (approximately birth to age eight). Empirical work often investigates literacy in authentic or naturalistic settings, engaging with issues such as emergent reading and writing practices, digital and multimodal literacies, the role of caregivers and educators, socio-cultural influences, and inclusive approaches to literacy learning.
