Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Couples Therapy was a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the study and practice of therapeutic work with romantic partners and marital relationships. Established in 1990, it focused on clinical, theoretical, and practical aspects of couple therapy, including marital counseling, relationship dynamics, communication patterns, and psychotherapy interventions designed for couples. The journal published research articles, case studies, theoretical papers, and clinical practice guidelines aimed at improving therapeutic outcomes for couples experiencing relational distress. Key topics included conflict resolution, emotional regulation in relationships, attachment theory applications, sexual therapy issues, divorce and separation counseling, and therapy for diverse relationship structures. In 2002, the journal was renamed and continued as the Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy, expanding its scope to include broader relational and systemic perspectives, such as same-sex couples, premarital counseling, and integrative psychotherapy approaches. It became an important publication in the fields of clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, and social work practice. The journal has contributed significantly to evidence-based couple therapy practices and continues to be relevant in modern relationship counseling research under its updated title, published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group).
