Journal of Counseling & Development (JCD)
Journal Descriptions
The Journal of Counseling & Development (JCD) is the flagship, peer-reviewed scholarly journal of the American Counseling Association (ACA), with origins dating back to 1921 when it was first published as the National Vocational Guidance Bulletin. Since then, it has evolved to reflect advancing research and practice in the counseling profession; in 1984 the journal adopted its current name. The journal publishes theoretical, empirical, and applied research articles that address key areas of counseling practice including assessment, diagnosis, intervention strategies, multicultural competence, ethics, professional issues, and emerging trends in mental health and human services. Its scope is intentionally broad, covering practice, theory, and research that inform and enhance counseling services across diverse client populations, work settings, and cultural contexts. Articles often include research findings, evidence-based practice techniques, case studies, and reviews that are relevant to scholars, counselors, educators, and practitioners. As a quarterly publication, JCD offers a forum for dissemination of rigorous research that bridges counseling science and real-world application. The journal supports ACA’s mission to empower the counseling profession with scholarly work that promotes human development, well-being, and social justice across individual and community contexts. It is indexed in major citation databases and widely read by professionals internationally.
