Journal of Communication Inquiry (JCI)
Journal Descriptions
Journal of Communication Inquiry (JCI) is a respected interdisciplinary scholarly journal established in 1974 that serves as a dynamic forum for critical inquiry into communication processes and media systems within cultural and historical contexts. It publishes rigorous research that examines how communication—the creation, dissemination, and interpretation of messages—shapes and is shaped by society. The journal welcomes a wide range of theoretical orientations and methodological approaches, including critical cultural studies, feminist theory, postmodern and postcolonial perspectives, media history, legal and ethical analyses, and empirical studies that explore the intersections of communication, power, identity, and representation. With an emphasis on both innovative scholarship and accessible analysis, JCI addresses topics such as media representation of race, gender, class and sexuality, media institutions and social change, and the role of communication in contentious public issues. Its quarterly issues feature original articles, critical essays, and book reviews that appeal to researchers, educators, and students in communication, cultural studies, journalism, sociology, and related social sciences. Notably, the journal has a tradition of graduate student editorial involvement through the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication, fostering emerging scholars’ engagement with peer-reviewed publication and advancing the field’s intellectual diversity.
