Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Chinese Writing Systems is a quarterly international academic journal launched in 2017 to provide a dedicated scholarly platform for research on Chinese writing and related complex scripts. The journal embraces a broad theoretical and interdisciplinary scope that goes beyond standard language studies to explore the unique characteristics of Chinese characters and other symbolic systems such as ancient scripts from China and beyond. Topics include the morphology, structure, and formation of characters, the relationship between script and cognition, the process of acquisition and learning of characters, and cross-linguistic comparisons with hieroglyphic systems like Egyptian and Sumerian writing. It welcomes original research articles, review papers, book reviews, and correspondence addressing both modern and historical perspectives. By publishing articles in English and Chinese, the journal facilitates international scholarly exchange and fosters deeper understanding of how writing systems shape language, culture, philosophy and thought. As a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and indexed in major databases such as Scopus, it adheres to rigorous peer review standards. Dedicated to advancing scholarly insight into the world’s most complex and influential writing system, the journal serves linguists, sinologists, cognitive scientists, historians, and anyone interested in script studies.
