Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Black Studies has been a leading voice in Black and Africana studies since its founding in 1970, providing a premier platform for interdisciplinary scholarship on the experiences of Black populations in the United States and around the world. Published bimonthly by SAGE Publications, the journal features high‑quality research that traverses disciplines to examine the social, political, cultural, economic, and historical dimensions of Black life. Its content includes original empirical studies, theoretical contributions, methodological innovations, and critical essays that address issues such as racial identity, educational outcomes, health disparities, economic mobility, community activism, artistic expression, and international perspectives on Blackness. Researchers from fields such as sociology, anthropology, history, political science, and cultural studies contribute to a rich body of work that deepens our understanding of systemic inequities as well as resilience and agency within Black communities. The journal’s interdisciplinary nature encourages cross‑fertilization of ideas and situates Black experiences within broader theoretical and global contexts. Over its more than five decades of publication, Journal of Black Studies has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic study of race and ethnicity, influencing both scholarly debates and public policy discussions. With a diverse editorial board and a commitment to rigorous peer review, the journal continues to be an essential outlet for cutting‑edge research in Black studies.
