Journal Descriptions

The Journal of Black Psychology is a long‑standing and influential scholarly journal dedicated to the rigorous study of psychological phenomena as they relate to Black populations around the world. Since its inception in 1974, the journal has served as the flagship publication of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi), striving to expand both scientific knowledge and culturally grounded understanding of Black human behavior. It publishes empirical research, theoretical essays, methodological innovations, and scholarly commentary that address the diverse lived experiences of Black individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan. Articles frequently explore topics such as African‑centered psychological theory, racial identity, mental health disparities, coping mechanisms in the face of social stressors, child development, and culturally informed therapeutic approaches. The journal’s interdisciplinary reach attracts contributions from psychology, counseling, education, public health, and related social sciences, all united by an emphasis on culturally responsive research and psychosocial well‑being. By foregrounding culturally relevant frameworks and empirical evidence, the journal challenges and enriches conventional psychological paradigms, highlighting the unique psychological processes and resilience factors within Black communities. It not only advances academic discourse but also informs practice, policy, and community interventions aimed at promoting equity and psychological flourishing. The journal’s consistent publication of high‑quality research has made it a cornerstone in the domains of ethnic minority psychology and culturally informed psychological science.
