Journal Descriptions

The Journal for the Study of the Pseudepigrapha (JSP) is a peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to advancing scholarly knowledge of the pseudepigraphal and related literature associated with Second Temple Judaism and the broader Hellenistic–Roman period. Founded in 1987, the journal fills a unique niche in religious studies by providing a dedicated forum for rigorous research on texts outside the traditional biblical canon but crucial for understanding ancient Jewish thought, literature, and influence on early Christianity. JSP publishes original research articles and critical reviews that apply diverse methodologies—including textual criticism, linguistic analysis, historical reconstruction, sociocultural interpretation, and theological reflection—to pseudepigraphic writings such as 1 Enoch, Jubilees, Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and other apocalyptic and wisdom texts. As a quarterly publication of SAGE Publications, the journal adheres to high standards of double-blind peer review, ensuring academic quality and integrity. Indexed in major scholarly databases, JSP reaches an international audience of researchers, theologians, and advanced students in biblical and ancient Jewish studies, contributing regularly to evolving debates and interpretations regarding early Jewish literature and its reception across religious traditions.
