Journal Descriptions

The Journal for the Anthropology of North America (JANA) is a semiannual academic journal that provides a vital platform for anthropological scholarship focused on North America’s peoples, cultures, histories, and social processes. Launched in 2018 as the successor to North American Dialogue, JANA is dedicated to publishing rigorous, reflexive, and critically engaged research. Its content spans a wide array of topics — including ethnographic accounts of community life, analyses of structural inequalities, Indigenous revitalizations, migration and borderland studies, and explorations of settler colonialism and its legacies. JANA actively encourages contributions that combine deep ethnographic grounding with theoretical insight, urging authors to articulate the broader research implications of their work and to engage with issues of ethics, social justice, and disciplinary innovation. Beyond traditional research articles, the journal also includes special features, reviews, and shorter reflective pieces that prompt critical dialogue in anthropology and related disciplines. Published in collaboration with the American Anthropological Association and supported by the Society for the Anthropology of North America (SANA), JANA connects scholars, activists, and practitioners interested in the past, present, and future of anthropology’s engagement with North America. The journal’s semiannual rhythm ensures continual engagement with evolving debates and emerging research in the field.
