Journal Descriptions
Irish Economic and Social History is an annual peer‑reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to publishing original research on the economic and social dimensions of Ireland’s past. Since its establishment in 1974 under the auspices of the Economic and Social History Society of Ireland (ESHSI), the journal has played a central role in advancing professional academic work on Ireland’s economic structures, social transformations, and cultural life across centuries. It welcomes high‑quality articles that draw on quantitative and qualitative methods to explore themes such as agricultural and industrial development, labour markets, poverty and wealth distribution, migration and diaspora, gender relations, education, urbanization, family and household life, and the interplay of economic and political forces in Irish society. The journal also includes shorter notes, document and source articles, abstracts of recent postgraduate theses, bibliographies, and book reviews, making it a valuable resource for scholars, postgraduate researchers, and students of Irish history. Research published in the journal often embraces both local and comparative perspectives, situating Irish experiences within wider global or European contexts. Its scope spans from medieval times to the contemporary era, offering deep historical insight that informs current debates on Ireland’s economic and social evolution.
