Journal Descriptions

The International Journal of Maritime History (IJMH) is a long-standing, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to the study and interpretation of humanity’s interaction with the sea and maritime environments. Since its founding in 1989, it has provided a respected forum for the dissemination of internationally relevant research on the historical dimensions of maritime affairs. The journal publishes quarterly and features original research articles, research notes, historiographical essays, and comprehensive book reviews that explore a wide spectrum of maritime historical topics. These include the evolution of shipping industries, maritime trade routes, port and coastal community development, shipbuilding technologies, seafaring cultures, labor histories, and interactions between maritime economic systems and broader social and environmental processes. IJMH also encourages thematic discussions and “forums” that bring together multiple perspectives on significant advances in maritime research. As both a publication of the International Maritime History Association and a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the journal adheres to rigorous standards of scholarly integrity. Its global editorial board reflects diverse methodological perspectives and regional expertise, making the journal a leading outlet for scholars in maritime history and related disciplines. Its readership includes historians, archaeologists, economists, anthropologists, and others interested in the historical interplay between societies and the maritime world.
