Journal Descriptions

Institutionalised Children: Explorations and Beyond (ICB) is a respected bi‑annual academic journal launched in March 2014 to advance knowledge and dialogue on care systems for children without parental care. It was initiated by the Indian NGO Udayan Care and, since 2020, published in partnership with SAGE Publishing. The journal adopts a double‑anonymized peer review to ensure high academic standards and is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), signifying strong ethical practices in scholarly publishing. ICB solicits multidisciplinary contributions—including original research, policy analyses, reviews, expert interviews and evidence‑based practice accounts—targeted at policymakers, practitioners, researchers, social workers and advocates. Its core focus areas include alternative care, family strengthening, deinstitutionalization, mental health of children in care, legislation and service delivery practices in the South Asian context and beyond. With its dual aim to influence policy reforms and practice improvements, ICB serves as a vital resource for stakeholders seeking deeper insights into the challenges and solutions surrounding out‑of‑home care for vulnerable children. The journal’s issues reflect a decade of regional evidence and discourse, enriching the global understanding of child welfare systems.
