Journal Descriptions

The Indian Journal of Gender Studies is a respected academic publication committed to advancing scholarship on gender and related social processes in India and beyond. Published triannually by SAGE Publications on behalf of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, the journal provides a platform for interdisciplinary research that bridges theoretical insights and empirical investigation. Its articles critically engage with issues such as the social organization of the family, invisibility of women’s work, gendered patterns of violence, institutional and policy analysis, women’s political participation, motherhood and childcare, and broader questions of social justice and equality. Importantly, the journal resists simplistic binary comparisons between men and women, opting instead for nuanced analyses that foreground gender as a dynamic and pervasive axis of power. With contributions from scholars across disciplines—including sociology, anthropology, political science, cultural studies and law—the journal supports rich intellectual debate. It also publishes special issues on topical themes and guest-edited volumes that respond to emerging challenges and dialogues in gender theory and practice. Membership in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) underscores its commitment to high editorial standards and ethical integrity.
