Journal Descriptions

The Huguenot Society Journal (formerly Proceedings of the Huguenot Society) has been published annually since 1885. Early numbers contained the Council's report, the Presidential address, and a printed version of papers read at meetings. Today, each edition carries four to eight different articles, some by well-known academics, a few shorter pieces, and a substantial number of book reviews. About the Huguenot Society The Huguenots were members of the Protestant Church, many of whom, in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, left their homes in France and the Low Countries to escape persecution. Among successive waves of refugees, the largest was precipitated in 1685, when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had given limited toleration to Protestants in France. In the years surrounding the revocation, more than 50,000 Huguenots arrived on the British Isles. French, Dutch and Italian churches had been established in London during the reign of Edward VI and other 'stranger churches' followed. In 1718, a French Hospital was founded in London; it is now located at Rochester in Kent. In 1885, the directors of the Hospital created a Society to promote the publication and interchange of knowledge about Huguenot history. The original 'Huguenot Society of London' has since been renamed 'The Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland', and an Irish Section with its own website has been established. Both aim to nurture and disseminate research on Huguenots and also to form a bond of fellowship among those who respect the Huguenots and seek to perpetuate their memory. Membership is open to anyone wishing to join.
