Journal Descriptions

First published in 1994, General Anthropology is a biannual interdisciplinary journal dedicated to fostering broad engagement with anthropological ideas and practice worldwide. It serves as both a scholarly venue and a forum for meaningful dialogue across anthropology’s four traditional subfields — cultural/social anthropology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and archaeology — and their applied dimensions. By publishing accessible research summaries, reviews, theoretical reflections, and applied perspectives, the journal bridges academic inquiry with real-world concerns. Its content often highlights how anthropological knowledge helps explain human diversity in behaviour, culture, social organization, language, biology, and past lifeways, while also addressing contemporary issues such as migration, identity, health, environment and social change. General Anthropology supports an integrative vision of the discipline, valuing contributions that deepen understanding of humanity across time and place, and that inform teaching, public engagement, and applied practice. As a publication sponsored by the General Anthropology Division of the American Anthropological Association, it connects scholars and practitioners, fostering critical reflection on the discipline’s methods, theories and roles in society. Over decades of publication, the journal has remained committed to clarity, relevance and intellectual breadth, making it a valuable resource for students, educators, researchers and anyone interested in comprehensive and reflective anthropology.
